PROP 8

For those who don't know what Prop 8 is:

Proposition 8 was a California State ballot proposition that amended the state Constitution to restrict the definition of marriage to a union between a man and a woman. It overrode a recent California Supreme Court decision that had recognized same-sex marriage in California as a fundamental right by overturning the California Defense of Marriage Act. The official ballot title language for Proposition 8 was "Eliminates Right of Same-Sex Couples to Marry." The entirety of the text to be added to the constitution is: "Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California."
The campaigns for and against Proposition 8 raised $35.8 million and $37.6 million, respectively, becoming the highest-funded campaign on any state ballot that day and surpassing every campaign in the country in spending except the presidential contest. The proponents argued for exclusively heterosexual marriage while claiming that failure to change the constitution would require changes to school curriculum and threaten church tax benefits. The opponents argued that eliminating the rights of any Californian and mandating that one group of people be treated differently from everyone else was unfair and wrong.

It's funny to me how people say we have separation between church and state in this country when we really don't. It pisses me off how people always say gay people should have their civil rights and protection under the law but the word "marriage" is said to be between a man and a woman. Now if we aren't including religion where do they get that information?.... it's from the Bible idiots. People can be so full of shit sometimes. My boy made a shirt that reads "How can I be free, if you're not free" So are any of us really FREE if the rights of some are still being taken away?

Hey its me Vane, I have to comment about this because this has been something I keep talking about with my friends. In Florida we had the same on our ballot, it was amendment 2 it is the same as prop 8 the wording and everything. It makes me sick how people don't view this as a civil rights issues. The other side of this argument that many didn't discuss is that it also takes away the rights of couples that have common law relationships. So they got all these people up in arms about gay rights and also managed to take the rights away from common law relationships straight or gay! Which no one talked about so that they can get there agenda pushed and taken care of. Its more about money than rights for the government, if you don't have rights you are not going to get the same tax breaks, insurance rates, social security, pensions. You know how much easier it is to do our taxes because we are married and how much more money we get back, and if Jamil and I had a kid we would get even more money. When he went to school the first year we weren't married after we got married we paid half as much for him to go to school. So many narrow minded people didn't even realize that they were voting about something that had way more to to do with than just the gay thing. And you know what, why does it matter so much to people if gays and lesbians want to get married, its not like straight people make it look all that good and keep it sacred. The worst was when people I knew in Miami would comment on it and says things like "I just don't think its right that gays get married." Mean while more than half of them no joke, are divorced, cheating, or have multiply kids with different partners. OMG many in this country are not holy enough to make such judgement calls. Let gays get married! Sorry to go on and on. I feel strongly about this...........
